In Canada, seniors over the age of 65 can receive government support for their medication costs.
This takes effect the first day of the month following your 65th birthday. For example, if your birthday is on August 13th, it applies starting September 1st.
Not all medications are covered by the Ontario Drug Benefit in Canada, Ontario. However, most commonly used medications for chronic conditions are eligible for coverage.
There are two categories for eligibility:
- If you have an income, you are classified as a high-income senior.
- If your income is low or none, you are classified as a low-income senior.
If you do nothing after turning 65, you are classified as a high-income senior, with an annual deductible of $100 for medications and a co-pay of $6.11 per prescription.
However, if your combined income for a couple is below $37,000, or $22,000 if you are single, you must apply separately for the low-income support program.
If you qualify after review, there is no annual deductible, and a $2 co-pay per medication is applied, but pharmacies usually discount this $2, so effectively, you can get your medications for free.
Check your income from last year and be sure to apply!! You can apply via email or mail, and you must submit copies of the Notice of Assessment for both spouses from the previous year.
